Note MeSo. The school year is winding down, I've been accepted into a great three week Latin academy for the summer, and I've barely been doodling.
However, I have been plotting. Tin Can's almost solid, White Queen is undergoing a world revision, and I've got this new piece forming that's looking promising.
I've also sent out four new queries for Dance and Nigel's little adventure, with eleven more lined up and waiting to be fired off. My revised query letter got a pretty positive reaction from the folks at Evil Editor, so I'm hoping to get a better response from the agents this time around.
This summer's shaping up to be pretty interesting. The following are my goals.
1. Bring down the house at the National Junior Classical League Convention in Fargo North Dakota. I'll be competing in every Academic and Creative Arts contest they have, and I'm super excited. This will be my third time attending Nationals.
2. Get Dance's story agented. I can't hope to publish by the time summer's out, but I'd really like to be able to put something noteworthy on the applications this fall
3. Get a jump start on college applications. I'm one of those overachiever folks, so I'll be aiming high and applying early decision to the best schools in the country. Wish me luck.
4. Learn trumpet and survive the two weeks of intensive training for marching band. I've never played a brass instrument up until four days ago, but I've made pretty good progress so far. Hopefully, by the time summer is out, I'll be a complete pro.
5. Keep up with schoolwork. I'll be taking 7 AP classes next year, which means lovely piles of summer homework. Also, there's the bassoon to keep up with. I've been slacking off on practicing all year, and I'd really like to move up to second chair next year.
6. Find some time for reading. I just discovered a collection of amazing books festering in a box in my basement, and I'm determined to get through them this summer.
So yeah. School was fun, I survived junior year, time to work even harder and squeeze every last drop out of the summer.
I'll leave you with a quote by George Bernard Shaw that I found on a plaque while wandering the UVA campus a few months ago.
"This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no "brief candle" for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."
Rock on.
